PERSONALITY Superficially, Lelouch appears as an indolent, somewhat apathetic teenager, if a tad bit haughty. He takes the antics of his student council friends in stride and exhibits a dry acceptance of the many events in which he is forced to participate in, preferring to make sardonic commentary rather than fully object. Deep down, however, he is a highly intelligent individual. Lelouch's mind has always been that of a tactician, one who is constantly making calculations and running through myriad possibilities no matter if the situation calls for such complexity or not. He is quick to deduce facts from simple, and even subtle clues. Regardless of whether his intent is military or otherwise, this thought process is also perpetual, which makes him a mastermind when it comes to strategic planning and execution. He possesses genius-level intellect and the natural ability to act and weave together false truths. Lelouch was able to successfully keep his alternate life as Zero hidden for quite some time, deceiving even those he holds dear with this purpose in mind.

With an apparent penchant for theatrics and poise, Lelouch is a natural born leader, charismatic as well as eloquent. He is highly confident in his position as overseer of the Black Knights and has no problems whatsoever with giving out orders according to his own ideals. Stubborn, occasionally arrogant, and indefinitely willing to make the necessary sacrifices in order to reach his goals, Lelouch believes beyond a doubt that his way of doing things is the correct one and will certainly not hesitate to manipulate others into thinking so as well. Some may call his sense of morality questionable in that he is willing to ruthlessly pursue that which is most important to him, believing that results are far more important than the methods used to achieve them. He is not necessarily a selfless individual, although he walks his path in order to create a better world from the carnage. Rather, what Lelouch does is for the his own sake and for the sake of those he loves.

Perhaps his most prominent trait – in that it motivates and affects him the most – is his unwavering loyalty to those he holds in his heart. His reasons for forming a rebellion against Britannia were out of a strong desire to see his mother's murder avenged, and to bring about a peaceful world where Nunnally would finally find happiness. Euphemia, his half-sister, was also close to him during childhood, and so Lelouch finds himself incapable of acting against her even when she discovers his true intentions as Zero. And in spite of his wry attitude towards the student council, it is shown that the consequences his actions have on them impact him significantly. As a realist, he prefers to make decisions based on logic over emotion, but when confronted with circumstances that concern his loved ones, Lelouch is more likely to abandon his own plans in favor of an approach that will not directly bring them to harm.
